Rancho La Merced Wildlife Refuge - The Tucan Hotel
Rancho La Merced is situated on the Pacific Coast
near Punta Uvita and the Ballena Marine National Park.
The ranch
has an area of 1250 acres which is comprised of a forest reserve with both
primary and secondary tropical wet forest as well as pasture, mangrove estuary,
frontage on the Morete River and beach. It offers a wide variety of environments
for you to explore to find interesting birds, reptiles, insects and mammals.
Here you can enjoy hiking around the trails of the reserve, enjoy the tropical
rain forest, the mangrove, go horseback riding for pleasure, or visit the
Ballena Marine National Park which is located adjacent to the ranch. Rancho La
Merced has been protected from hunting for many years and is an active member of
Asociacion de Amigos de la Naturaleza del Pacífico Central y Sur (ASANA). It is
part of the Tapir's Path Wildlife Corridor (Corredor Biológico Paso de la Danta).
Directions:
By bus: A bus leaves the
empresa Blanco terminal in San Isidro (just off the Interamerican Highway) daily
at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. arriving in Rancho La Merced at 10:45 a.m. and 5:45
p.m. approximately. If you are in San José, there are buses every hour on the
half hour, from 5:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. (3 hour ride). In order to make it
here the same day, you must travel from San José in the morning before or at
10:30 a.m. From Quepos either of the two buses to San Isidro, the 5:30 a.m. or
the 1:30 p.m. make it on time to change buses.
Other bus
schedules: Ciudad Cortés - Dominical 8:00 a.m. and 5:00
p.m. Ciudad Cortés - Uvita 1 p.m. This bus is very unstable. Be sure you
check.
San José - Uvita through Quepos (no bus changes) Dic - April:
5:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. May - Nov: 3:00 p.m. This trip lasts from 6-7
hours.
By car: From San José, Highway 2 - South Interamerican
Highway to San Isidro de El General, 135 Km, once in town take a right 35 Km to
Dominical. When you hit the Costanera Road take a left and continue 16 Km. You
will find a sign on your right.
